UUs and Sex Education

In the early 1960s. Directors of Religious Education responded to parent and youth requests for help navigating the changing world of sexuality. They joined forces with the UUA to create a new curriculum for middle schoolers called About Your Sexuality (AYS). This morning, we’ll hear an origin story of courage and tenacity. You will learn a thing or two!

Rev. Barbara Cornell is a hospital chaplain at Providence Swedish Edmonds Hospital, just north of Seattle. She joined an About Your Sexuality class in 1973. After Barbara became religious educator at the Shoreline UU congregation, she and her husband, Dane Scott became trained AYS facilitators. When Our Whole Lives arrived in 2000, Barbara brought that program to her congregation. She and Dane are proud parents of Katie and Will who, naturally, are OWL grads.
