Grasped by What We Cannot Grasp

For over fifty years, poet Dan Gerber has practiced paying attention to the world he actually lives in through a variety of means, including Zen meditation, deep (and slow) reading, creative writing, and some fly-fishing thrown in for good measure. In our accelerating modern era, within which human attention is ever-more splintered, Dan shares poems, stories, and insights on how he tries – moment by moment – to maintain mindful presence in the world.

About Dan Gerber: Dan Gerber is a poet and novelist visiting Port Townsend in connection with the publication of a new book of poems by Copper Canyon Press, titled Particles: New & Selected Poems. In addition to this new book of poems – his ninth – he has published three novels, two books of non-fiction, and a collection of short stories. Dan’s life has included a good deal of variety – from being a high school teacher, to a professional racecar driver, to a Zen Buddhist monk. He was the co-founder, with Jim Harrison, of the literary magazine Sumac. Born and raised in Fremont, Michigan, he lives with his wife, Debbie, near the Santa Ynez Valley in California.

“Love” is, indeed, “a many splendored thing” … particularly in the English language where it is used as an umbrella word to cover our positive feelings of everything from our links to inanimate objects to our most intimate human relationships. This sermon will attempt to distinguish some of our different types of love, with a special look, on this Sunday following Valentine’s Day, at “romantic love”.
