Covenant Groups at QUUF

by Mike Morrissey

My favorite prompt in our covenant group agendas is this: “The essence of these covenant groups is the invitation to speak from the heart and the privilege of hearing another person so speak.”

That’s a rare invitation. Yet, in these groups, we get that prompt in our agenda twice a month. And we sit with a small group of 6 to 8 people to speak and hear our personal check-ins and to discuss a topic. The topic can be the one suggested in the agenda, or something else, if that’s what the group prefers. There are a few respectful parameters for the meetings: making the meetings a priority unless traveling or sick; and listening while another talks rather than talking over them. There’s also an agreement, called a covenant which is our guide to how we want to interact in our meetings (not to worry, there are lots of example covenant statements out there). Beyond that, it’s a chance to get to know a group of like minded people and celebrate our differences. Over time and with respect, this is a powerful formula. The topic in September is “Building Community.”

I’ve been in quite a few of these groups since I joined QUUF in 2006. Each one has been unique, and each has been very rewarding. We now have about 300 members in our Fellowship. That’s an overwhelming number for an introvert like me. So many names and faces and stories, oh my!! But, as I’ve heard it said, 90% of success is just showing up. And there is depth and purpose in these meetings. They are a respite from a tumultuous world, a haven for speaking and listening deeply, a place to build community, and a way to get to know ourselves and others at a level that is not usually available. Yes, that can feel a bit risky, but it is definitely worth the effort.

These groups form each church year. The initial agreement is to meet for just that year. This year, sign-ups will start on September 9. Some groups stay together for just one year while others have continued for many years. I hope you will consider this opportunity.

If you would like a more in depth look at what’s possible in this kind of group, check out this 2012 article from UU World: https://www.uuworld.org/articles/listen-heart. It’s a good read.
