Purpose: To develop and direct the choir of the Fellowship and to oversee the Music Program Committee.
- Select music for choir to sing and hold choir rehearsal once a week.
- Direct choir three Sundays per month. Lead hymns during Sunday Services. Assist the Music Program Committee as needed with Special Music.
- Coordinate with the Music Program Committee, accompanist(s), Sunday Services Committee, minister and guest speakers for appropriate themes for preludes, postludes, offertory and special music. Keep in touch with the Office Administrator to provide any hymn numbers, names of music or other details related to music at the choir service by the Wednesday prior to the service, so that the Order of Service may be prepared in a timely manner. The Choir Director (upon agreement with the minister) may select or suggest hymns for upcoming services. Familiarity with the Hymnal is essential.
- Encourage people to join the choir, either by open call or by audition (if this change is warranted). Encourage other instrumentalists in the fellowship and the larger community to accompany the choir.
- Assist as needed with special services including Christmas Eve and (member) Memorial Services.
- Purchase or otherwise obtain music for the choir, staying within the annual music budget approved by the board and the congregation. Set up, compile and maintain a file of all music purchased for QUUF, in the fellowship office.
- Select inclusive music for performance, taking into account the varied skill levels of the choir members, as well as the diverse belief systems and preferences of our congregation, and trying to match the theme of the service of the day. The words of the music are crucial. If anyone in the choir has a problem with any of the language or thoughts in a lyric, discuss it and together, propose alternatives. Running the music program in a democratic way enables everyone to sing the songs with a full voice and a whole heart. Seek breadth and inclusion in choosing music, remembering that we sing to all humanity--find pieces that celebrate the threads that touch us all!
- Supervise and provide direction to the accompanist(s).
- Provide QUUF Treasurer with monthly timesheet for accompanists and special musicians, so that accurate payments can be made promptly.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
- This position is supervised by the minister, and evaluations are done jointly by the minister and the Personnel Committee. Hiring, firing and job description changes are handled by the Personnel Committee.
Note: The Choir Director may volunteer to organize 5th Sunday services--all music--around themes selected by the choir, accompanist, minister or any combination of them. These and any other special events must be pre-arranged with the Choir Director, and will be done at her sole discretion, not as the Choir Director, but as a member of the congregation.
