Sound System Instructions

TAPE ONLY THE EARLY SERVICE UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTIFIED
(Turn off office phone ringer during service)

Unlock the door to the control room. The key is in the upper right hand drawer of the desk on the wall behind Nancy's desk. The key is attached to a spoon and is labeled "sound room". The control room light can be switched on with the string hanging in front of the equipment.

Turn on all of the components with the switched plug strip on the side of the rack. (All of the necessary components should now be "on"). Check to be sure someone hasn't changed the settings on the MACKIE: Those settings that have been preset are marked by a white arrow. No other settings need to be adjusted now. Do not change any settings on the MACKIE , the wireless microphone receivers, or the hearing aid transmitter.

Locate the box of hearing assistance devices (4 earphones, 7 receiver units), and the two wireless microphones on the shelf in the control room. Turn each microphone on with the power switch by the little light. If the light does not flash, or stays on, the battery is low and needs to be replaced (there should be extra 9 V batteries on the shelf). Leave the power switched on, and notice that the yellow lights on the receivers (the boxes with rabbit ears) are on (the green light indicates that the receivers are getting power).

Put the hearing devices on the back table of the sanctuary, and take the microphones to the podium. Switch each wireless microphone on and test that it can be heard. Then switch each one off (the audio switch, not the power). Test that the stand microphone is working as well. Return to the control room.

To record a service, locate a new blank 90 minute tape on the shelf and label the tape (not the box) with the day's date (day/month/year), speaker, and subject. Insert the tape in the left hand drive of the "record" tape deck. (The strip of brownish colored tape that you can see on the cassette should face down, and the right hand reel in the cassette should be empty) Depress the "ATC" button and the deck will run for about a minute making the correct settings for the tape, and then returning the tape to the beginning. Depress the "reverse mode" button until this symbol * appears in the display. (In this mode the deck will automatically reverse the tape one time to record the second side.) Depress the "REC" button and a red "REC" will appear in the tape deck display and it is ready to record. Set the record level at about 5 or 6.

Just before the service, locate the person who will wear the the lapel microphone and pin it on. Tim usually uses the stand mic. Instruct the speaker to turn the microphone audio "on" when they are prepared to speak. Instruct others in the service that it is important that the stand microphone or hand microphone must be used so the service will be recorded and the hearing aid system will function. All microphones can be on at the same time without interference.

As the service begins, depress the (forward) button on the "record" tape deck under the left hand tape drive and the recording will begin. Observe the recording level on the tape deck display as two moving horizontal white lines. Increase or decrease the tape deck record level adjustment so that loudest sounds just bring the lines to the middle of the display, and the lines rarely are displayed as red. This level adjustment may have to be corrected as different people use the microphones.

The volume of the speakers in the sanctuary is adjusted using the Main Master control on the MACKIE. This adjustment will not affect the record level on the tape deck. You should put your head out the window or go downstairs occasionally to check on the sound level. Tim has a strong voice, and you may have to turn the volume down for him.

If a recorded music source (a CD or tape) is required in the service put the CD or tape into the appropriate player, turn it on, and select CD or Tape from the select switch. The volume of the recorded source is controlled by the Tape In Level knob on the MACKIE. Turn it fully to the left to begin, then slowly bring it up to about 9 o'clock. The music should "fade in" as you do this (it does not change the overall volume in the sanctuary). When the music is finished, "fade out" using the Tape In Level knob, remove the tape or CD, and turn off the player.

After the service be sure to do the following:

  1. Stop the tape with the button under the cassette. Then fast wind the tape until it stops (it will have reversed after 45 minutes and be going in the opposite way than when it started) by depressing the fast button. Remove the cassette and put it in the RE box in the office. Be sure the tape is labeled with the day/month/year, speaker and subject.

  2. Use the plug strip switch behind the equipment rack to turn off all of the components.

  3. Retrieve the lapel microphone and hand microphone, switch off the power, and return them to the control room. (If you don't switch the power off, the wireless mics will be dead next week!) Do not disconnect the stand microphone.

  4. Collect all of the hearing aid receivers and earpieces on loan and bring the box of hearing assistance equipment up to the control room. Check to see that all units are switched off. (If you don't switch them off, they will be dead next week).

  5. If more new tapes or batteries are needed, be sure to leave a note for Nancy to buy some more.

  6. Lock the control room door and store the key.
